Processing versus epistemic models: A new strategy for studies of decision making and judgement

John Fox

COGENT has been used successfully to model the detailed behaviour of a group of medical students carrying out a reasonably challenging diagnosis task. The flexibility of the system has permitted a variety of experimental manipulations with interesting results. In addition, however, the study suggests that the "knowledge level" model of complex cognitive processes may be relatively independent of the "process level" model, and may suggest an important direction for future development of the system.
